An Introduction to Yellowfin Tuna Fishing

A managing partner and head of capital markets at Laidlaw & Company, James “Jim” Ahern focuses his investment activity on biotechnology and healthcare companies. When away from his responsibilities at Laidlaw, James “Jimmy” Ahern enjoys tuna fishing.

Found in locations across the world, yellowfin tuna rank among the most common offshore gamefish. Yellowfin tuna tend to swim together in large schools, making them easy to spot from large distances. In terms of lures, yellowfin tuna eat bait ranging from sardines and mackerel to pelagic crabs and squid. If given enough time, yellowfin tuna can grow to weights of more than 400 pounds, but these fish are typically only caught in the Eastern Pacific and mostly off the coast of Mexico.

When it comes to catching yellowfin tuna, there are a number of different strategies that can be used. Because the tuna often feed near the top of the water, topwater techniques are typically enough to catch a good number of fish. All tuna have reasonably good vision underwater, making fluorocarbon leaders a useful option as well.
